York University in Toronto, Canada has just announced that they will be offering 1 year of free tuition to two lucky students each year beginning in 2016! The catch? Applicants must live in York Region and be taking at least three courses per semester (six full-time credits). For the winner, you’ll receive $20,000 per year of your tuition paid by the university. York University
The school’s program takes two students at a time and pays their tuition in exchange for working with York professors to develop new research programs. Students are expected to spend half of their time doing research, in addition to coursework (while other students also participate in research projects). The two positions are renewable every year if all goes well. The program will cost York $2 million, but it should help improve its rankings and reputation by attracting more graduate students—and hopefully funding from those graduate students once they land jobs. The positions start July 1, 2017. Applications must be submitted online by November 15, 2016. The deadline has been extended until December 5th!
How to study free abroad
As of July 2018, students from outside Ontario will pay domestic fees for first-year undergraduate and graduate programs. (Up to $27,340 a year.) As a result, international students have even more reason to consider York’s one-year program. It’s ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in an English-speaking environment but may not be able to make a long-term commitment because of work or visa obligations. With traditional study abroad you can expect to spend eight months at another university and four months at home.

The program is open to full-time students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at York. Students will be eligible if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and have a family income of $60,000 or less. Applicants must be currently enrolled at York during their application year. This includes both transfer and continuing students who will be registered in York courses for Fall 2017. The tuition waiver is only available to one full-time undergraduate degree program at York per student; you may not double count any credits by participating in multiple programs within a given year. If you register for more than one degree program within a given year, your tuition waiver will only apply to credits that count towards your first chosen program.

Conditions of Participation
Students who are currently enrolled full-time or part-time at an accredited college or university in Canada or abroad will be considered. Students must submit a formal application with essay by November 30, 2017. Candidates will be assessed based on their academic record and how they contribute to improving their local community and advancing social justice. York will name two winners who are free to take up York’s offer anytime during September 2018 through to April 2019. At any time before April 2019 they may choose to return to their previous institution, but must pay tuition fees normally charged by that institution for any term(s) during which they have taken advantage of York’s offer.
